Charlotte Mahlum, a Nevada woman who had breast implants surgically installed in 1985 following a subcutaneous mastectomy, filed suit against a number of entities involved in the manufacture and distribution of the implants. Mahlum alleged a number of disabling and physically and emotionally painful conditions and symptoms following the rupture of one of the implants in 1993. The suit was filed naming as a defendant Dow Chemical Company, a parent of the principal manufacturer, Dow Corning Corporation. On October 28, 1995, Mahlum was awarded approximately $4.1 million in compensatory damages by a jury, and on October 30, 1995 an additional $10 million in punitive damages.
